How is God inviting us into a deeper relationship with Himself?

Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone has had a wonderful week. I want to share a quote from Pope Benedict XVI that I recently read. He writes, “When God disappears, men and women do not become greater; indeed, they lose the divine dignity, their faces lose God’s splendor. In the end, they turn out to be merely products of a blind evolution and, as such, can be used and abused. This is precisely what the experience of our epoch has confirmed for us.” We do not need to be theologians to notice this. It seems that more and more often our society is trying to wipe away the face of God. We know as well what has happened in our culture alongside this. Men and women lose their true identity, which is only bestowed by God, in the confusing and misleading transgender culture. We see an increase in anxiety and anger throughout society. Notice that Pope Benedict speaks of “divine dignity”. He means to tell us that dignity has some transcendental meaning because it is bestowed by God.

St. Athanasius famously wrote, “The Son of God became man so that we might become God.” I would like to invite everyone to consider this phrase this week. How is God inviting us into a deeper relationship with Himself? Maybe even more, how is He inviting me to remind others of this dignity that they share? As Pope Benedict rightly notes, our age has confirmed that many people have lost God and thus their identity and dignity. We too play a part in the drama of our time, we are not mere spectators but called to engage the culture. To merely attend Sunday Mass is not what it means to be Christian, rather to let our presence at the Sacrifice of the Altar give us the strength to share the Good News of salvation in Jesus Christ.

¡Espero que todos hayan tenido una semana maravillosa! Quiero compartir una cita del Papa Benedicto XVI que leí recientemente. Escribe: “Cuando Dios desaparece, los hombres y las mujeres no se vuelven más grandes; de hecho, pierden la dignidad divina, sus rostros pierden el esplendor de Dios. Al final, resultan ser meros productos de una evolución ciega y, como tales, pueden ser utilizados y abusados. Eso es precisamente lo que nos ha confirmado la experiencia de nuestra época”. No necesitamos ser teólogos para notar esto. Parece que, cada vez con mayor frecuencia, nuestra sociedad está tratando de borrar el rostro de Dios. Sabemos también lo que ha sucedido en nuestra cultura junto con esto. Hombres y mujeres pierden su verdadera identidad, que solo Dios les otorga, en la confusa y engañosa cultura transgénero. Vemos un aumento de la ansiedad y la ira en toda la sociedad. Note que el Papa Benedicto habla de “dignidad divina”. Quiere decirnos que la dignidad tiene algún significado trascendental porque es otorgada por Dios.

San Atanasio escribió la famosa frase: "El Hijo de Dios se hizo hombre para que nosotros pudiéramos llegar a ser Dios". Me gustaría invitar a todos a considerar esta frase esta semana. ¿Cómo nos invita Dios a tener una relación más profunda con él mismo? Quizás aún más, ¿cómo me invita a recordarles a los demás esta dignidad que comparten? Como señala acertadamente el Papa Benedicto, nuestra época ha confirmado que muchas personas han perdido a Dios y, por tanto, su identidad y dignidad. Nosotros también participamos en el drama de nuestro tiempo, no somos meros espectadores, pero que estamos llamados a involucrarnos en la cultura. Asistir simplemente a la Misa dominical no es lo que significa ser cristiano, pero dejar que nuestra presencia en el Sacrificio del Altar nos dé la fuerza para compartir la Buena Noticias de la salvación en Jesucristo.
