Happy Trinity Sunday!

This Most Holy Trinity Sunday invites us to stand in awe before the God who saves us in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Gospel message begins with the love of God for “the world.” The heart of our faith is not fear, but confidence born of God’s saving action in Jesus Christ.

On this day, the Church also turns our attention to what it means to belong to God. The Trinitarian baptismal formula in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit is meant to express that Christian baptism inserts the person into the Trinity and distinguishes Christian baptism from other rites. Because Baptism is a sacrament entrusted by Christ, the Church teaches that the words matter. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith states clearly that Baptism “conferred in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” conforms to Christ’s command, and that “the Church has no right to change what Christ himself has instituted.” Therefore, “any Baptism is invalid when it does not contain the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity, with the distinct expression of the three Persons with their respective names.” The Church further teaches that the liturgical formulas do not offer alternatives to those terms; they are “words of faith” through which the sacrament’s meaning is expressed and safeguarded. By virtue of our baptism, we live with the presence of the Holy Trinity in our lives.

On this Trinity Sunday, let each family take a moment to thank God for the grace of Baptism, whether received in infancy or later in life. May we believe in Christ with hearts that welcome His saving love, and may our lives increasingly reflect the communion of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

La Santísima Trinidad

¡Feliz Domingo de la Santísima Trinidad!

Este Domingo de la Santísima Trinidad nos invita a postrarnos con reverencia ante el Dios que nos salva en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. El mensaje del Evangelio comienza con el amor de Dios por “el mundo". El corazón de nuestra fe no es el miedo, sino la confianza que nace de la acción salvadora de Dios en Jesucristo.

En este día, la Iglesia también nos invita a reflexionar sobre lo que significa pertenecer a Dios. La fórmula bautismal trinitaria “en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo” tiene por objeto expresar que el bautismo cristiano inserta a la persona en la Trinidad y distingue al bautismo cristiano de otros ritos. Dado que el bautismo es un sacramento confiado por Cristo, la Iglesia enseña que las palabras son importantes. La Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe afirma claramente que el bautismo “concedido en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo” se ajusta al mandato de Cristo, y que “la Iglesia no tiene derecho a cambiar lo que Cristo mismo ha instituido.” Por lo tanto, “cualquier bautismo es inválido cuando no contiene la invocación de la Santísima Trinidad, con la expresión distinta de las tres Personas con sus respectivos nombres.” La Iglesia enseña además que las fórmulas litúrgicas no ofrecen alternativas a esos términos; son “palabras de fe” a través de las cuales se expresa y salvaguarda el significado del sacramento. Que creamos en Cristo con corazones que acogen Su amor salvador, y que nuestras vidas reflejen cada vez más la comunión del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo.
