Happy Lent!

It has only been a few days of Lent and I am sure you have already been tempted. Throughout our history of salvation, the Lord used 40 days to prepare for something great. Each year we are challenged to invite the Lord to stay close to us during our penitential season of Lent. We cry out like the psalmist: “Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.” When we do find ourselves in trouble our hope comes from the Lord.

Our Blessed Lord teaches us prayer, fasting, and almsgiving during Lent. These habits have a gradual increase over our lifetime that remain rooted. As St. John Damascene states in the Catechism #2559, “prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God.” Time spent in Eucharistic Adoration becomes a habit that takes root for a lifetime. Another prayerful consideration is reading the Word of God everyday. Our daily readings draw us into the season of Lent in a beautiful way.

In terms of fasting, we give up something to restore order in our life. Fasting is not only penitential, but it helps with a discipline to acquire self-mastery over our instincts and freedom of heart. (CCC#2043) As we deprive ourselves, our Blessed Lord is invited to fill our emptiness with His goodness. The fruits of a Lenten season bring about a harvest of good fruit if we stay the course and be faithful.

The stewardship here at Saint Joan of Arc is inspiring when it comes to supporting the needs of the parish, offering time to serve the poor, teach our students the faith, and assist with our liturgies. To offer a Lenten sacrifice is a way of living out the third aspect of Lent, almsgiving. This could be a slight increase in your regular giving to the parish, supporting our St. Vincent de Paul mission, our youth ministry, and many other prayerful considerations around the parish. This sacrificial giving does hurt a bit, but connects us closely to Christ's sacrifice for our salvation. We tend to be aware that all is a gift from God and I want to offer my first fruits back to Him and His church.

1° Domingo De Cuaresma

¡Feliz Cuaresma!

Han pasado solo unos días de Cuaresma y estoy seguro de que ya has sido tentado. A lo largo de nuestra historia de salvación, el Señor utilizó 40 días para preparar algo grande. Cada año tenemos el desafío de invitar al Señor a permanecer cerca de nosotros durante nuestro tiempo penitencial de Cuaresma. Clamamos como el salmista: “Señor, quédate conmigo cuando esté en problemas”. Cuando nos encontramos en problemas, nuestra esperanza viene del Señor.

Nuestro Bendito Señor nos enseña la oración, el ayuno y la limosna durante la Cuaresma. Estos hábitos tienen un aumento gradual a lo largo de nuestra vida y permanecen arraigados. Como dice San Juan Damasceno en el Catecismo # 2559, “la oración es la elevación de la mente y el corazón a Dios o la petición de bienes a Dios”. El tiempo dedicado a la Adoración Eucarística se convierte en un hábito que se arraiga durante toda la vida. Otra consideración de oración es leer la Palabra de Dios todos los días. Nuestras lecturas diarias nos llevan a la temporada de Cuaresma de una manera hermosa.

En términos de ayuno, renunciamos a algo para restablecer el orden en nuestra vida. El ayuno no es sólo penitencial, sino que ayuda con una disciplina para adquirir autodominio sobre nuestros instintos y libertad de corazón. (CIC # 2043) Mientras nos privamos, nuestro Bendito Señor está invitado a llenar nuestro vacío con Su bondad. Los frutos de un tiempo de Cuaresma traen una cosecha de buenos frutos si mantenemos el rumbo y somos fieles.

La administración aquí en Santa Juana de Arco es inspiradora cuando se trata de apoyar las necesidades de la parroquia, ofreciendo tiempo para servir a los pobres, enseñar a nuestros estudiantes la fe y ayudar con nuestras liturgias. Ofrecer un sacrificio de Cuaresma es una forma de vivir el tercer aspecto de la Cuaresma, la limosna. Esto podría ser un ligero aumento en su donación regular a la parroquia, apoyando nuestra misión de San Vicente de Paúl, nuestro ministerio juvenil y muchas otras consideraciones de oración en la parroquia. Esta donación sacrificial duele un poco, pero nos conecta estrechamente con el sacrificio de Cristo por nuestra salvación. Tendemos a ser conscientes de que todo es un regalo de Dios y quiero ofrecerle mis primicias a Él y a Su iglesia.
