Happy Sunday!

What is the cost of discipleship? Is it possible to ponder the prophet Jeremiah being lowered into a muddy cistern? This doesn't seem fair because he did no wrong, but spoke the truth of God entrusted to him. He remained faithful and was not abandoned in the pit. In fact, God raised another voice in the court official Ebed-melech to rescue Jeremiah before he could die.

In gratitude, think of the many prophets sent to help you and support you when the faith gets difficult and challenging which is heavy and costly. Perhaps you are that voice to others; praise God for that gift of lifting our brothers and sisters up.

Now hear our Blessed Lord say: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing…Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” These words are hard to digest and receive. As a family of faith in our parish, home, and family we long for harmony, unity, and peace. Yet, our Blessed Lord reminds us that following Him faithfully leads to certain tensions, even within our own family and those we love. Faith is a gift from God and challenges the ways of error and comfort. When we are rooted in the truth, we find ourselves misunderstood or rejected. This is because the ways of the world are not always the way of God and lack His goodness. This is where the tension and division starts to come out.

Let us not be afraid of the fire that our Blessed Lord speaks. That fire has a dwelling place in all the baptized and that is the fire of the Holy Spirit. The fire that purifies, strengthens and roots us in the truth. This brings about true peace and assurance that you are never abandoned by God in the muddy cisterns in our lives.

20° Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

¡Feliz domingo! ¿Cuál es el costo del discipulado? ¿Es posible reflexionar sobre el profeta Jeremías siendo bajado a una cisterna llena de lodo? Esto no parece justo porque él no hizo nada malo, sino que dijo la verdad de Dios que le fue confiada. Permaneció fiel y no fue abandonado en el pozo. De hecho, Dios levantó otra voz en el funcionario de la corte Ebed-melech para rescatar a Jeremías antes de que muriera. En agradecimiento, piensa en los muchos profetas enviados para ayudarte y apoyarte cuando la fe se vuelve difícil y desafiante, lo cual es pesado y costoso. Quizás tú seas esa voz para otros, alaba a Dios por ese don de levantar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

Ahora escuchemos a nuestro Señor bendito decir: «He venido a traer fuego a la tierra... ¿Acaso piensan que he venido a traer paz a la tierra? De ningún modo. No he venido a traer la paz, sino la división». Estas palabras son difíciles de digerir y aceptar. Como familia de fe en nuestra parroquia, hogar y familia, anhelamos la armonía, la unidad y la paz. Sin embargo, nuestro Señor nos recuerda que seguirle fielmente conduce a ciertas tensiones, incluso dentro de nuestra propia familia y con aquellos a quienes amamos. La fe es un don de Dios y desafía los caminos del error y la comodidad. Cuando estamos arraigados en la verdad, nos encontramos con que se nos malinterpreta o se nos rechaza. Esto se debe a que los caminos del mundo no siempre son los caminos de Dios y carecen de su bondad. Ahí es donde empiezan a surgir la tensión y la división.

No temamos al fuego del que habla nuestro Señor. Ese fuego habita en todos los bautizados y es el fuego del Espíritu Santo. El fuego que nos purifica, nos fortalece y nos arraiga en la verdad. Esto nos trae la verdadera paz y la seguridad de que Dios nunca nos abandona en los pozos fangosos de nuestra vida.
