Happy Sunday and the last day of August!

One of the many virtues valued here at St. Joan of Arc is humility. In our readings from Sirach and Luke we get inspiration in humility. Sirach counsels, “My child, conduct your affairs with humility… Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God” (Sir 3:17-18).

Oftentimes ambition and achievement, although good, are seen as our purpose but remember that true greatness is found not in status, but in service. This is noticed in the many ways our volunteers humbly work quietly. All ages can be taught the quiet strength of a humble heart.

The way of humility is setting aside quiet time with our Blessed Lord in the Eucharist. How we prepare ourselves for the Holy Mass is a humble action because we have an offering to give and a heart to be consoled every time we worship our God.

In the Gospel, Jesus notices how guests seek the places of honor and gently teaches: “When you are invited, go and take the lowest place…” (Luke 14:10). His words are not just about seating at a table, but about the posture of our hearts before God and others. Our fundamental flaw is Pride because it separates in a deadly and sinful way. When we respond in humility we draw close to the Lord and will open our hearts to others.

When we are invited to certain tables, do we seek recognition or do we serve in quiet love? Do we lift others up, or do we strive to be lifted? Take to heart this week our Blessed Lord’s promise, “Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

El Camino de la Humildad

¡Feliz domingo y último día de agosto!Una de las muchas virtudes valoradas aquí en Santa Juana de Arco es la humildad. En nuestras lecturas del Eclesiástico y de Lucas nos inspiramos en la humildad. El Eclesiástico aconseja: "Hijo mío, conduce tus asuntos con humildad... Humíllate cuanto más grande seas, y hallarás gracia ante Dios" (Sirácide 3, 17-18). A menudo la ambición y los logros, aunque buenos, son vistos como nuestro propósito, pero recuerda que la verdadera grandeza no se encuentra en el estatus, sino en el servicio. Esto se nota en las muchas maneras en que nuestros voluntarios trabajan humildemente en silencio. A todas las edades se les puede enseñar la fuerza silenciosa de un corazón humilde.

El camino de la humildad es reservar un tiempo de silencio con nuestro Bendito Señor en la Eucaristía. Cómo nos preparamos para la Santa Misa es una acción humilde porque tenemos una ofrenda que dar y un corazón que se consuela cada vez que adoramos a nuestro Dios.

En el Evangelio, Jesús se da cuenta de cómo los invitados buscan los lugares de honor y enseña con delicadeza: "Cuando te inviten, ve y ocupa el lugar más bajo..." (Lucas 14:10). Sus palabras no se refieren sólo a los asientos en una mesa, sino a la postura de nuestros corazones ante Dios y ante los demás. Nuestro defecto fundamental es la soberbia, porque separa de forma mortal y pecaminosa. Cuando respondemos con humildad nos acercamos al Señor y abriremos los corazones a los demás.

Cuando nos invitan a ciertas mesas, ¿buscamos reconocimiento o servimos con amor callado? ¿Elevamos a los demás o nos esforzamos por ser elevados? Tomad a pecho esta semana la promesa de nuestro Bendito Señor: “Porque el que se engrandece a sí mismo, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será engrandecido”
