Love One Another

Happy Sunday!

This Sunday we have another short yet powerful Gospel reading. Jesus says, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” How profoundly simply is this new commandment that Jesus gives the disciples. “Love one another.” There are no conditions, just a blanket command to love. Jesus tells us that we are to love as he has loved us. How has he loved us? By dying for us while we were still sinners. He did not wait for us to understand everything perfectly. He died for us knowing that we would still, at times, choose sin. Likewise, we are not to wait until we have assurance that someone won’t turn against us. We are called to love one another even if we are not loved in return.

The second part of this is also incredibly important. “This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” The world should notice something different about Christians. She should notice that we are not aggressors, we are not people of violence. Rather, we are people of deep love, people who love humanity, people who serve. Christians are not those who merely are good to each other. No, we love those who are difficult to love. We love our enemies even in the face of their violence. In a world that is increasingly polarized, we are called to love and serve.

Many of us are aware of the protests going on around the country because of the leaked Supreme Court decision that looks to overturn Roe v. Wade. Protestors have tried to organize to disrupt Sunday Masses. I would invite you to please pray for these people and their conversion. Please pray that if they try to disrupt liturgies, the power of the Eucharist in front of them will change their hearts. Please pray that while they will be asked not to be disruptive, they will also be shown true love, and hopefully that encounter with authentic love will lead to their conversion. Finally, please pray for and end to abortion in our country. If Roe v. Wade is overturned, there will still be much work to do in the Pro-life movement. Thank you to all of you who already actively participate in Pro-life ministries. If you do not, please consider offering your time. There are so many needs and so much good to be done! We have many wonderful Pro-life clinics around the Valley that always need help.

Know of my prayers for you and your families for a blessed week.

¡Feliz domingo!
