I Know Them and They Follow Me

Happy Sunday! And Happy Mother’s Day!

I hope that this day is one filled with many blessings for all of the mothers in our parish. During this month of May, a month of Mary, we entrust our whole parish, but in a special way all mothers to the protection and guidance of the Blessed Virgin Mary. St. Luke tells us twice in the beginning of the Gospel he wrote that Mary would ponder the events of her life in her heart. She constantly kept a contemplative spirit and would bring to the Lord everything happening concerning herself and her Son. She is an example for all Christians and in a special way mothers, who always hold their children very dear to their hearts.

This Sunday we also celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday. The Gospel is rather short, but in it we hear, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish.” Jesus, the Good Shepherd, desires to give eternal life to those who hear his voice and follow him. Eternal life with Jesus is an invitation. It is not something we create for ourselves. We follow Jesus himself and His Church. So long as we have the Shepherd we have nothing to fear. St. John Chrysostom writes about Jesus as the Good Shepherd and says, “As long as we are sheep, we overcome and, though surrounded by countless wolves, we emerge victorious; but if we turn into wolves, we are overcome, for we lose the shepherd's help. He, after all, feeds the sheep not wolves, and will abandon you if you do not let him show his power in you.” St. John Chrysostom reminds us that shepherds have sheep, so not only are we to remember that we have the Good Shepherd, we also remember that we have a role, to be sheep. We ask God for the grace to live as sheep, docile to the voice of the Shepherd who desires to give us eternal life so that we may never perish.

Have a great week and know of my prayers!

Padre Connealy
