St. Paul Miki's Example of Forgiveness

Happy Sunday!

This weekend I am on retreat with our Verso l’Alto high school youth group in Prescott. Last year we had a great time spending the weekend in prayer and growing in fellowship. Please keep our teens in prayer as they come off retreat and that they continue to grow in the graces they have received.

February 6th is the feast of one of my favorite saints. He is not well known but is a powerful example of what the Gospel teaches and commands. St. Paul Miki was crucified with his fellow Jesuits in Japan in 1597. In the Office of Readings for his memorial we read this, “Our brother, Paul Miki, saw himself standing now in the noblest pulpit he had ever filled. To his “congregation” he began by proclaiming himself a Japanese and a Jesuit. He was dying for the Gospel he preached. He gave thanks to God for this wonderful blessing and he ended his “sermon” with these words: ‘As I come to this supreme moment of my life, I am sure none of you would suppose I want to deceive you. And so I tell you plainly: there is no way to be saved except the Christian way. My religion teaches me to pardon my enemies and all who have offended me. I do gladly pardon the Emperor and all who have sought my death. I beg them to seek baptism and be Christians themselves.’”

This powerful witness of forgiveness is an example for our time as well. Even in the pain and suffering he experienced, he did not seek rebuke, but conversion. Every moment, especially those when we suffer can be offered back to God for those whom we love, and even like for St. Paul Miki, for those who persecute us. I would like to encourage everyone to consider someone in your life whom you might need to forgive. It could be an old grudge or a new wound, but ask the Lord for the grace to offer a forgiveness from the heart, a forgiveness that seeks the good of the other person.

Know of my prayers for you all and have a great week!

¡Feliz domingo!
