Pray for an End to Abortion

01-17-2021Pastor's LetterFr. Dan Connealy

Happy Sunday!

I pray everyone’s year is off to a good start. Tomorrow, January 18, the parish office will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will have the regularly scheduled morning confessions and Mass. There will NOT be evening confessions and Mass. I hope everyone is able to enjoy the national holiday.

This Friday, January 22, is the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Roe v. Wade legalizing abortion throughout the country. Please join me in praying for an end to abortion throughout our nation and world. There are many things we can say about the gift of human life and the atrocity of ending a human life in its initial stages. Especially now though, with Christmas fresh in our minds, we remember that God came, not as an adult, but in the womb.

When the archangel Gabriel announces the birth of Jesus, he says, “you will conceive in your womb and bear a son” (Luke 1:31). He speaks of the conception of Jesus because that is when God becomes man. In Nazareth today you can go to the house of the Annunciation, over which a great basilica has been built. There is a sign in front of the altar in the house that says, “VERBUM CARO HIC FACTUM EST.” This translates to “The Word was made flesh here.” While we often remember and commemorate the manger of Bethlehem, the Church also pays great attention to the specific place where Jesus was conceived. All of this is to remind us that from conception human life is present. As a gift, it is not something for us to manipulate, but rather something to be treasured.

It can be easy in our world, with so many troubles, to lose this sense of the gift. I would like to invite you to also pray for mothers who find themselves in difficult situations and feel alone. There are many great organizations in our diocese who help such women. Aid to Women’s Center, Life Choices Women’s Clinic, Maggie’s Place, and First Way are a few that come to mind. If you have ever felt called to volunteer in this ministry these would be a great place to start.

I hope everyone has a great week. Know of my prayers!

¡Feliz domingo!

P. Connealy
