What will separate us from the love of Christ?

Happy Sunday!

I hope everyone has had a good week. Our second reading this Sunday from St. Paul’s Letter to the Romans seems to speak straight to our present times. He writes, “What will separate us from the love of Christ? Will anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword? No, in all these things we conquer overwhelmingly through him who loved us.” St. Paul’s premise is beautiful, he gets right to the heart of things asking the most important question, “What will separate us from the love of Christ?” He correctly presupposes that this is the most important thing. He doesn’t ask what can destroy our nation (indeed, Israel had experienced its near collapse multiple times) because even that cannot separate us from God.

One’s primary concern in life must be being close to Jesus Christ and His deep love for us. He lists off numerous distractions of the world, “anguish, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or the sword?”. Some of these things speak to the interior life, some to external hardships, and some to death. But none of these things can separate us from Christ’s love. Rather, St. Paul reminds us that in the midst of these things, “we conquer overwhelmingly through Him who loved us.” Not only are we not separated from Christ, we conquer overwhelmingly! This is the truth, that no distress can be greater than the love Christ desires to shower upon us.

I want to offer a huge thank you for all those who have signed up for online giving or increased their recurring gift as we strive to meet our matching gift of $27,060. Every little bit helps us to reach our goal. I am incredibly grateful to each of you for helping us receive this very generous gift.

Know of my prayers for all of you this week and please keep me in yours as well!

Christ’s peace,

¡Feliz domingo!
