Mary - Theotokos - "God-bearer"

Dear Friends,

A very happy Sunday to you! I would like to consider once again during the month of May the Mother of God, especially this special title which honors her maternity. In Greek, this term is Theotokos, which means "God-bearer". Mary, having given birth to Jesus Christ, is forever called the Mother of God. This esteemed role is one that brings us confidence. God, not satisfied to merely send His Son for our salvation, also raises a lowly woman of Israel to be a pivotal instrument in this drama. She no longer stands as a face in the crowd, but the one who is blessed "among women".

Mary's role as the Mother of God is one of humility, one that receives the word of God and gives it life. Her maternity is an invitation to us to allow God's word to bear fruit in our lives. Her motherhood is one that constantly pondered the word and allowed it to bear fruit in her life. It is by this connection with the heavenly Father that she constantly sought the face of her Son, the one who gives true life to the world. She is the model who beholds the face of Christ constantly because she received the Word. As a mother, Mary invites us dwell in this same security. The Scripture scholar Erasmo Leiva-Merikakis writes this: "Is hearing the Word of God not inexorably followed by conceiving it and bringing it to the light for all to see? Is not every Christian thus called, after the Virgin Mother, to be a God-bearer, a theotokos, who must himself give birth to what he wants to see?" (Fire of Mercy: Heart of the Word, Volume I)

What is that we want to see? Under the protection of our Mother we can bring her our petitions to present to the heavenly Father. She will always invite us to walk with her as she ponders the life of her Son. This is why she invites us to pray the rosary. The rosary is the prayer that ponders the Word of God with His Mother. We pray that the Mother of God will intercede for her children so that we can know the joy of giving God's word life in the world.

Queridos Amigos,

P. Connealy
