Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Today we celebrate the last Sunday of the liturgical year, the Solemnity of Christ the King. Today we find ourselves standing at the foot of the Cross. Jesus has been crucified and is dying. Our Lord Jesus, who never sinned, is being executed as a common criminal for a crime He did not commit. He was beaten, crowned with thorns, and forced to carry a cross up a hill where He is crucified. He has endured abuse, was jeered at, mocked by soldiers and taunted by the crowds and also by a common criminal who hangs at His side.

Above His head are the words, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals proclaims Our Lord's innocence: "this man has done nothing wrong." And then, quite astonishingly, he acknowledges the Jesus kingship: "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." And Jesus replies, "Today you will be with me in paradise."

On the Feast of Christ the King, we recall the last human exchange of Jesus' life. And as we leave this liturgical year, we might ask how Christ's Kingship relates to you and me? And the Gospel gives us the answer. There is nothing so regal or royal, there is nothing that gives us back our humanity so completely, there is nothing that so lifts the darkness, there is nothing that so brings paradise into our hearts than God's mercy.

And, in turn, we are to offer a share of that forgiveness to others. We are called to love those we would rather not love. Maybe even troubled or difficult relatives or coworkers or the person being rude to us in the grocery store or on the road. Those moments when we forgive as God has forgiven us, we speak with our lives, that Christ is truly OUR King.

Cristo el Rey

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Hoy celebramos el último domingo del año litúrgico, la solemnidad de Cristo el Rey. Hoy nos encontramos a los pies de la cruz. Jesús ha sido crucificado y está muriendo. Nuestro Señor Jesús, quien nunca pecó, está siendo ejecutado como un criminal común por un crimen que no cometió. Lo golpearon, lo coronaron con espinas y lo obligaron a cargar una cruz en una colina donde fue crucificado. Ha soportado abusos, fue abucheado, burlado por los soldados y burlado por las multitudes y también por un criminal común que cuelga a su lado.

Sobre de su cabeza están las palabras: "Este es el rey de los judíos". Uno de los criminales proclama la inocencia de Nuestro Señor: "Este hombre no ha hecho nada malo". Y luego, sorprendentemente, reconoce a la monarquía de Jesús: "Jesús, recuérdame cuando entres en tu reino". Y Jesús responde: "Hoy, Estará conmigo en el paraíso ".

En la fiesta de Cristo el Rey, recordamos el último intercambio humano de la vida de Jesús. ¿Y terminando este año litúrgico, podríamos preguntarnos cómo se relaciona el reinado de Cristo con usted y conmigo? Y el evangelio nos da la respuesta. No hay nada tan regio o real, no hay nada que nos devuelva nuestra humanidad tan completamente, no hay nada que levante la oscuridad, no hay nada que traiga el paraíso en nuestros corazones que la misericordia de Dios.

Y a su vez, debemos ofrecer una parte de ese perdón a los demás. Estamos llamados a amar a aquellos que preferiríamos no amar. Tal vez incluso familiares o compañeros de trabajo problemáticos o difíciles o la persona que nos está siendo grosera con nosotros en la tienda o en el camino. Esos momentos cuando perdonamos como Dios nos ha perdonado, hablamos con nuestras vidas, que Cristo es verdaderamente NUESTRO Rey.
