Stop Complaining!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Several years ago, as I hiked 125 miles along the Camino in Spain, I came across a vandalized STOP sign.  In addition to STOP, someone added complaining.  My friend,  Fr. Richard, took a picture and sent me a copy.  With this one photo, he challenged me to check my attitude.  How do I deal with things when things don’t go my way? How do I deal with hot weather, scandals and frustrating politics, along with the regular challenges of daily life?

I was reminded of this STOP sign when I read from the Book of Exodus during Lent.  It is  stunning how the Israelites complain during the exodus. As God liberates them from Egyptian bondage, they are so forgetful. Israel’s response to their deliverance is not praise and trust. Instead, they are grumbling, complaining and quarreling.

We’re going to be killed by the Egyptians!  We’re thirsty!  The food is bad! I’m tired! Who made Moses the boss?  How long is this journey going to take?  We should’ve stayed in Egypt!  Even when they had arrived, Psalm 106 recalls that, “The people refused to enter the beautiful land, for they wouldn’t believe His promise to care for them.  Instead, they grumbled in their tents and refused to obey the Lord.”

It’s really an embarrassing account of how spoiled we can be as human beings!

Not too long ago, Pope Francis challenged Catholics to let go of bitterness and negativity that prevents us from experiencing God's consolation and joy.  “So many times, we cling to what's negative; we hold onto the wound of sin inside of us, and many times, the preference is to stay there.  Instead, Jesus always tells people to "get up" and have no fear, because He is there to offer salvation, consolation and joy!”

Pope Francis suggested that there are two realities that prevent Catholics from finding God’s solace: resentment and complaining. “When people choose to be resentful and complaining, we stew our feelings into a broth of bitterness.  God asks people to be strong, get up and trust in Him! People need to ask themselves, How is my heart?  Do I harbor bitterness there? Some sadness? And what is on my lips?  Is it praise to God, beauty or chronic complaints?"

Grumbling gets us nowhere fast.  In fact, it is astep backwards and blinds us from the many ways that God is working in our lives and how blessed we are.  Fr. Richard sent me this beautiful prayer on-line as I pondered this topic that I am adding to my daily night prayers.

  • Father,
  • I repent of a default attitude of whining.
  • I repent of seeing the glass half empty.
  • I repent of catching others doing wrong and missing when they do right.
  • I repent of grumbling about not having what I haven’t even had enough faith to receive.
  • I repent of complaining about leadership, as if I could do better.
  • I repent of thinking the grass is greener elsewhere.
  • I am done with being a whiner and complainer.
  • I hereby declare that I will believe Your promises to me!
  • Today I will be grateful to you and to the people in my life!
  • Thank You for all you do for me, all you have done, and all you will do when I have faith to receive it!  In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
  • God Bless,

Deja de quejarte!

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,
