Mary, Mother of the Church

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Pope Francis added an additional Marian day to the Roman Calendar that will occur on a fixed date every year.  It is called the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, or B. Mariæ Virginis, Ecclesiæ Matris.  The Memorial occurs on the Monday following Pentecost Sunday.

Why did Pope Francis add this the Roman Calendar? The Holy Father wishes to promote this devotion in order to “encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety."

The decree reflects on the history of Marian theology in the Church’s liturgical tradition and the writings of the Church Fathers. St. Augustine pointed out that Mary is the Mother of the members of Christ because with charity She cooperated in the rebirth of the faithful into the Church.  St. Leo the Great noted that the birth of the Head is also the birth of the body, thus indicating that Mary is at once Mother of Christ, the Son of God, and mother of the members of his Mystical Body, which is the Church.

Pope Francis’ decree emphasizes an earlier decree of Pope Paul VI who, in 1964, “declared the Blessed Virgin Mary as ‘Mother of the Church, that is to say of all Christian people, the faithful as well as the pastors, who call her the most loving Mother’ and established that ‘the Mother of God should be further honored and invoked by the entire Christian people by this tenderest of titles’”.

Then, in the Holy Year of Reconciliation in 1975, the Church inserted into the Roman Missal a votive Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church.

When I was growing up, Marian devotion was so much a part of the Catholic grade schools that I attended.  Of course, May crowning ceremonies were important and exciting.  It was often preceded by processions with banners, candles, flowers and the like.  We also reflected on Marian devotions such as the scapular, the miraculous medal and the many apparition stories of Mary.

We had a Marian shrine in the backyard as well as a beautiful image of Our Lady in our home.  I can remember praying the rosary as a family asking for Mary’s intercession for our special intentions.  We had a wooden rosary that was large enough for all of us to hold onto as we prayed the rosary.  In many ways, these simple practices bolstered our Catholic identity as well as our love for Our Blessed Mother.

It goes without saying that Mary’s role is to point to Her Son, Our Savior Jesus Christ.  She was the first to say, “Yes” to Our Lord during the Annunciation. Mary never turned away from Our Lord by never committing a sin.  She is the model example of faith.

I pray the rosary daily.  It has been a tried and true devotion for me, most especially in the car and as I walk/run.  The rosary has also calmed me during times of anxiety and stress when words and clear thinking have escaped me.  Our Lady prays for us as the most powerful intercessor before Our Lord!

Perhaps in the waning days of April, we can develop a devotion plan for the month—pray the rosary as a family at home and/or before Sunday Mass; read a book about Marian devotion; attend an extra Marian Mass (May 13, May 31 or any Saturday during May).

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!

God Bless,

María, Madre de la Iglesia

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,

Don Kline, V.F.
