A New Heart

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Many people suffer from a troubled conscience. So what is the remedy? Can we actually ask God to give us a new heart? I have had conversations that sound a lot like this one. “I am simply confused…and scared…I do not want to go to hell, and I have worried about this and felt hopeless for long enough. Is it a Mortal Sin to… (you fill in the blank)? I have felt worthless and beat myself up over this issue for a long time now and I would just like some peace but I feel so guilty. I know God forgives me by I still feel awful.”

Simply put, you can ask God, “Could I start again, please?” That is the point of the rainbow after the Great Flood. Sin destroyed and God provided a new beginning. God and humanity and creation are all about new beginnings. That is also the point of Lent—a new beginning or, better, another new beginning; a truly new beginning, since we ourselves are different each year, and we need this Lent in a way we have not needed Lent before. Here is a simple way to look at repentance: Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?

Who is in need of repentance? That would be everyone! We all need to change some patterns of behavior, some bad attitudes, some bad habits… though maybe not entirely. Who are you in God’s eyes? Who has God made you to be? Who do you need to turn toward to be forgiven? Who do you need to forgive?

What do you need to repent of? What behaviors or attitudes get in the way of your peace? What is weighing heavy on your heart? What thoughts plague your mind? What sort of things do you spend your time doing that are preventing you from moving closer to God and who He made you to be?

When do you repent? This involves our use of time… turning away from wasting time, turning toward the “time of fulfillment.” Every second of every day is an opportunity for practicing goodness. We can spend our time growing into the saints God has created us to be or not. Where sin abounds, God grace in there in abundance. Our Lord is always ready to receive a humble and contrite heart. Rejoice in God’s mercy always!

Where do you repent? That depends on your state in life. We all experience “occasions of sin,” in which we turn away from God and turn back to God. Cooperating with the enemy move us away from who God made us to be. A teenager deals with different temptations than a senior citizen. Thanks be to God, both can turn towards Our Lord to be strengthened to do His will at all times and in every circumstance in which they find themselves.

How do you repent? That’s up to you. You know better than I do what might best help you along the path of repentance. But do not neglect the sacrament of Reconciliation. Lent gives us three ways of moving from the darkness of sin to the goodness of God. Prayer. Fasting. Almsgiving. How you pray, fast, and give alms is a personal journey that we all must take in order to become the saints God has created us to be.

Why? St. Peter gives an excellent reason: “Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God.” If we are not led to God, then Christ suffered for us in vain. What would be the point? Our Lord died for us so that we might experience the depth of His love and His mercy. Only in relationship with Christ do we find the freedom that relieves our guilt and brings that peace that we long for.

Jesus also gives us the ultimate reason to our question of why we need to repent: “The kingdom of God is at hand.” In that context “repent” still means “regret and resolve,” but we may add one more element: “in hope.” There is something wonderful to hope for if our repentance is genuine. The kingdom of God is a beautiful prospect well worth repenting for.

God Bless,

Un nuevo corazón

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

¿A quién necesitas perdonar?
