The Care of the Elderly

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is a wonderful blessing to be able to serve you as your priest. I get to meet so many people from so many different walks of life. Today I want to share what a great blessing it is to have so many wonderful seniors in our parish who are so dedicated to Our Lord. Your presence blesses us all. You deserve our prayers, our respect, and our love. I am grateful for all those who have sacrificed so much to make St. Joan of Arc such an incredible place. Your dedication and desire to be a part the life of our parish is inspirational and will hopefully motivate generations to come to do their part and to make a positive difference in our world.

I do fear that many in our culture have lost sight of those who come before us. It can be easy to forget and take for granted that this parish of St. Joan of Arc, for example, did not just appear on the map. St. Joan of Arc exists because of the blood, sweat, and tears of generations who have come before us. I speak for many when I say how grateful I am to you for your willingness to help build such an amazing parish. Let us pray that we never take for granted the sacrifices that have been made by those who have come before us.

Pope Francis recently said that “In the west, scholars present the current century as ‘the century of old age’: there are fewer children and an increase in elderly people. This imbalance is a great challenge to contemporary society. And yet, a certain culture of profit insists on making the elderly appear to be a burden, an extra weight. They are not only unproductive; they are an encumbrance and are to be discarded. And discarding them is sinful. We do not dare to say this openly, but it happens. There is something cowardly in this inurement to throwaway culture. We want to remove our growing fear of weakness and vulnerability, but in this way, we increase in the elderly the anguish of being inadequately supported and abandoned.”

As St. Joan of Arc ages, it is our Christian duty to notice the struggles, loneliness, and needs of the elderly. This was something my parents taught me through their example. How good it was for my siblings and me to mow the lawn, to visit, and do chores for aging relatives and friends.

It’s good to access the needs of the elderly in your life and reach out to them. For example, we have had an increase in requests from elderly parishioners who simply need a ride to mass. What a wonderful gift you can give someone who has lost his or her ability to drive. If you can help, call the parish office.

God Bless,

All praise and glory are yours, Lord our God. For you have called us to serve you and one another in love. Bless our sick today so that they may bear their illness in union with Jesus' sufferings and restore them quickly to health. Bless those who have grown old in your service and give them courage and strength in their faith. Lead us all to eternal glory. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

El Cuidado de los Ancianos

El Cuidado de los Ancianos

Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas,
