Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Fr. Stanley Rother's beatification was held in Oklahoma City last Saturday. This is the 14th United States Saint. The U.S.A. also has its first beatified martyr.

So who is Fr. Stanley Rother? He was a farm boy raised from our nation's heartland. He was raised in Okarche, Oklahoma and his Catholic parish, school and family farm were the pillars of his life. He had good priestly examples so that when the Holy Spirit called him to priestly ministry, he had good examples to guide him.

While Fr. Rother attended Mount St. Mary Seminary, the Universal Church asked the Churches of North America to establish missions in Central America. Soon after, the Dioceses of Oklahoma City and Tulsa established a mission in Santiago Atitlan in Guatemala, a poor rural community of indigenous people.

After he was ordained, Fr. Rother accepted an invitation to join the mission team where he spent the next 13 years of his life. In addition to his pastoral mission, Fr. Rother employed his talents as a farmer to improve the lives of his parishioners, fixing farm machinery, working the fields, building a farmers' co-op, a school, a hospital, and a Catholic radio station, which was used for catechesis to more remote villages.

In 1980-81, the violence of a Guatemalan civil war inched closer to the once-peaceful village where Fr. Rother served. Disappearances, killings and danger became a part of daily life. Fr. Rother remained steadfast in his ministry and supportive of his people.

Toward the end of his life, Fr. Rother found himself on a government "assassination list" that led him back to Oklahoma for a period of time. But he returned to the mission and reflected on that return saying, "The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger. If it is my destiny that I should give my life here, then so be it.... I don't want to desert these people, and that is what will be said, even after all these years…"

Shortly after his return to Guatemala, he was gunned down in his rectory. Stories of his sanctity and martyrdom led to the canonization process for Fr. Rother.

The message of his life is the pursuit of holiness in all circumstances. He also teaches us that it is our duty to stand with the poor and the suffering as Fr. Rother did. Let us pray that inspired by his example, we may bravely defend life from conception to natural death and in all circumstances.

Blessed Stanley Rother, Pray for us!

El Beato Stanley Rother

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
