Founding Father

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Much ink has been spilled in recent days about the founding fathers of our country. Today's readings present the real Founding Father… Our Heavenly Father… God. Moreover, the readings answer the question of God's existence, the divinity of Jesus and the divine authority of the Church. The first question of God’s existence is a question that I am sure every serious philosopher, theologian, and grandmother must address. Does God exist? Today's Scripture readings answer the question of God’s existence. St. Paul proclaims: "Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are His judgments and how unsearchable His ways!"

St. Paul knows that God is far beyond human reason but St. Paul and countless other holy men and women throughout history have shown us that it is reasonable to believe in God. In fact, St. Paul argues that it is unreasonable to deny God's existence: those who deny God’s existence have blurred reality with fantasy. You can read Paul's argument for yourself in Romans. That being said, faith AND reason go together. Actually, faith perfects reason and leads us to a more complete and holy life. Pray that your faith may be strengthened so that you can grow in your love for God who is love.

Now, if a person recognizes that God exists, then a second question may follow: Is Jesus God? Today Jesus asks the disciples who people say that He is. There are a lot of opinions but Our Lord is looking for more than opinions. Jesus looks at each disciple in the eye and asks the question: "But, you, who do you say that I am?" When you die, your eternity will depend on how you answer that question. The answer is squarely on your shoulders. No one else can answer for you. What you say to Jesus depends on your own informed and faith-filled heart.

I can tell you the Church’s answer and my answer are the same: “I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end” (Nicene Creed).

Lastly, did Jesus found the Church? To answer that question, you have to ask what Jesus meant when He told Simon Peter that he was the rock upon which He would build His Church. Did Jesus mean the Roman Catholic Church? There have been those who have created “the church of what’s happing now" but is that what Our Lord intended when He founded the Roman Catholic Church?

The Roman Catholic Church has always taught from the beginning that Christ founded the Church with divine authority when Our Lord gave St. Peter, our first pope, the keys. These keys are meant to unlock hearts so that the entire world may come to know the love of Our Lord Jesus, the Son of God and the founder of the Roman Catholic Church.

PADRE FUNDADOR

Queridos hermanos y hermanas,
