Jubilee of Mercy

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The popular Christmas movie, It's a Wonderful Life, illustrates, in a beautiful way, part of God's plan for each one of us. It is also a clear example of God’s mercy.

In the movie, the actor Jimmy Stewart plays a small town savings and loan director named George Bailey. As the movie begins, we see that George is in a crisis. He doesn't have any money to pay his bills, and a wave of depression is drowning him. Feeling overwhelmed with life, George is on the verge of committing suicide. He wrongly believes that the life insurance policy will take better care of his family and business than he can.

When all hope seems lost, God mercifully intervenes in George’s life by sending an angel, named Clarence, to encourage George Bailey and stir up his hope. It's not easy, but the angel does the job, and the crisis is turned into a joyful, life-transforming milestone.

God knows that each one of us has needs and troubles. He knows us better than we know ourselves. God also knows our hopes and dreams. You may be in an all-out crisis or living your dream life. Whatever your situation, God knows best what will help you move forward on life's journey because God is Mercy. Our Lord wants to send us an angel during this Advent to help you grow in grace.

This Tuesday, December 8, is a holy day of obligation and marks the beginning of the Jubilee of Mercy – an entire year celebrating the Mercy of the Father. There will be a Vigil Mass beginning at 6:00pm on Monday evening and a morning Mass on Tuesday, December 8, at 8:30am. Both Masses will be in the main Church. There will be many opportunities during the coming year to experience God’s grace... especially His Mercy. Please offer this prayer throughout the year and know that Our Lord is with you always...especially when the road is hard and your cross seems heavy.

God Bless,

Jubilee of Mercy Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,

You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from Being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!”

You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face In the world, its Lord risen and glorified.

You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.

Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.
