Memorial Day

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This weekend, we remember Americans who pledged and even lost their lives to protect our country and preserve our freedom. The cost of freedom was and is paid for by those who are willing to lay down their lives for our great nation. We give thanks to God for all those who are willing to pay the ultimate price for our freedom. If you know a military service man or woman, make sure to thank them for their service and add a few prayers today for peace on earth.

Our Catechism of the Catholic Church helps us to understand what freedom means: Paragraph 1731-1734 says, "The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes. There is no true freedom except in the service of what is good and just. The choice to disobey and do evil is an abuse of freedom and leads to "the slavery of sin." Freedom makes man responsible for his acts to the extent that they are voluntary. Progress in virtue, knowledge of the good, and self-discipline enhance the mastery of the will over its acts."

By this definition we realize that many Americans misunderstand freedom in a selfish way and are being led day by day into the slavery of sin. And of course, a proper understanding of freedom is vital to our future as a nation. Freedom is not the right to do whatever we want. If our definition of freedom has evolved into disregarding rules or any sense of correct behavior, we decline as a nation into chaos and, ultimately, slavery to sin.

On the other hand, those of us who live out authentic freedom in the service of God and the human family build up the nation that we love. This is played out every day by so many of our parishioners counteracting the actions of so many that are lost. We must keep up and even double up our efforts!

Our narthex has a beautiful display maintained by our Knights of Columbus honoring those who preserve our nations freedom. When you see the faces in those pictures, I encourage you to think of how you use your personal freedom. Let us pray that we always use our freedom wisely for the good of all.

A Memorial Day Prayer

Heavenly Father, On this Memorial Day, we pray for those who courageously laid down their lives for the cause of freedom. May the example of their sacrifice inspire in us the selfless love of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Bless the families of our fallen troops and fill their homes and their lives with your strength and peace. In union with people of goodwill of every nation, embolden us to answer the call to work for peace and justice, and thus, seek an end to violence and conflict around the globe. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen

God Bless,
Fr. Don Kline

Memorial Day

Oracion de Memorial Day

Padre Don Kline
