Putting God First

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
What happens when we put God first? Today Our Lord reminds us that great blessings happen when we put God first in our life, in our family, and in our finances. In the first reading for this Sunday we hear about a woman arrested with her seven sons. The king wanted them to deny their Jewish religion by eating pork. The courageous mother encouraged her sons to endure torture rather than betray God. It is difficult for most of us to imagine the pain they inflicted on her children, but they put God first. They knew that this life is short and - no matter what we do - none of us can avoid suffering, so put your trust in God.

Our Lord calls each of us to do something similar when He calls us to be good stewards. Like the mother of those seven sons, we are asked to put God first. You may not see immediate results. It may require some suffering. But if you put God first, things will eventually work out for the best.

I recently read about a lady asked a priest to help her with the family budget. It was an unusual request, especially since the priest was not that good with finances. But the lady was desperate and the priest agreed to do what he could. So they made a list of the family expenses: rent, telephone, utilities, food, clothes, school supplies, medical and dental care, etc., etc. With the limited family income, it seemed like an impossible task. They just could not make ends meet. Then the priest asked her, "What about a tithe?"
"What do you mean?" she asked. "You know," the priest said, "tithe, giving the first ten percent to God." Now, this really seemed crazy. If they couldn't make things balance with the small income, how were they going to do it if they took out ten percent from the top and gave it to charity? A strange thing happened in her life. When they set aside ten percent for God and give the money to the Church and to charity, and learned to live with the other ninety percent, they began to look at things differently. Some of their priorities changed - and the budget fell into place. They realized they could do without many unnecessary things. They had much more peace and where able to trust God more. It is truly amazing what happens when we put God first in all things. Try it and see!

God Bless,

Poniendo a Dios Primero

Tal vez no vean resultados inmediatos.
