What Belongs to God? (part IV of IV)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week I would like to offer you step three of three steps to being a good steward.

Step 3Treasure: Here it comes, right – the money pitch. Wrong! We have to understand that giving money is one of the vehicles by which we can exercise our Christian call to respond to God’s generosity. There is a sacramental aspect there–using something earthly, something human to exercise our call to be disciples of Christ.

I know people find it hard to pledge what they will give in the up-coming year, but look upon it as discipline or training for giving. Like athletes exercise to strengthen themselves for their sport, so disciplined giving helps us grow in generosity. When we discipline ourselves in the ways of Our Lord,we grown in holiness. Discipline helps us to focus on what is truly important. When people complain about church related issues, it is often a sign that they have not practiced discipline in their own life. This story helps explain what I mean.

There once was a family who were walking from church to their car. The mom and wife complained that the tile in the sanctuary was dirty and looked terrible. The son complained that the pews were scratched and splintery, and that he gotten stuck by a splinter when he sat down. The little girl said the padding in the kneelers had been squashed down, leaving a hard surface and rough edge, and that it had hurt her knees when she tried to kneel. The dad was quiet, so at one point before they got to the car the mom and wife said,“What did you think, dear?” He thought for a moment, then smiled and said, “I didn’t think it was bad... for a buck!”

Here is a another way to look at it. Why fear to pledge? You sign a mortgage that ties to you 20 or 30 years of monthly payments, or a car loan for 3 to 6 years. This is one year at a time, and if you can’t make a payment the sheriff won’t come after you, and it won’t show on your credit rating. It’s between God and you.

It’s not about money; it’s about changing minds and hearts.

So think about that as you pray and reflect on your stewardship. Please examine your stewardship, and you decide how to commit yourselves to being faithful disciples of the Lord.

Thank you for your generosity and your willingness to hear and heed the Spirit of God.

God Bless,

Fr. Don Kline

Padre Don Kline
