What Belongs to God? (part III of IV)

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

This week I would like to offer you step two of three steps to being a good steward.

Step 2
How about talent? Use the talents you have to give to God in gratitude for all He has given you. Everybody has talents and some many talents. We are called by God to share those talents with others. Putting our talents to use for others is not the same as "helping father." It is recognizing God's blessings, thanking Him, and putting them to use, because that is our pathway through this life to salvation. It is the beginning of that salvation how. A bit of heaven on earth.

So, as you fill out the time and talent forms remember that you are not volunteers; you are more than volunteers. You are stewards of God's goodness and grace. Volunteering is optional; responding to God with your talents is a call from God. Good stewards take their commitments more seriously than volunteers. Stewardship is not a hobby. For hobbies people tend to offer just what is left over, instead of making time to share. So, one is a good steward as he or she gives the Body or Blood of Christ to a communicant, or as he or she pours coffee for someone after Mass or at a post funeral luncheon. Different ways, different gifts, but same ideal – service in Christ's name. It applies whether one is teaching one of our religious education classes, or cleaning a classroom or moping up the sanctuary in church.

Good stewards are like the spokes in a wheel. The church is the hub, the world is the rim; the more spokes the stronger the wheel is. So, as of today we have no more volunteers (we may occasionally refer to them as such); they are good stewards.

God Bless,
Fr. Don Kline

Padre Don Kline
