2nd Sunday of Lent

Happy Sunday!

This Sunday’s first reading is taken from Genesis 22 where we hear the marvelous account of Abraham following God’s command to sacrifice Issac on a mountain in the land of Moriah. As Abraham lifts his hand to sacrifice Isaac he is stopped by the angel of God. Because of his obedience God blesses Abraham in abundance with descendants as numerous as the stars. In the Gospel we find another mountain but on this one we hear the account of the Transfiguration. We move from the sacrifice of Abraham’s beloved son to the glorification of God’s beloved Son.

In Jesus Christ we become, not merely descendants, but heirs to the kingdom. The Preface for today says this, “For after he had told the disciples of his coming Death, on the holy mountain he manifested to them his glory, to show, even by the testimony of the law and the prophets, that the Passion leads to the glory of the Resurrection.” What God prepared in Genesis, he brings to fruition in His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ.

Many people have approached me with questions about the COVID-19 vaccines. The Catholic Medical Association and the National Catholic Bioethics Center have offered some very helpful resources about the vaccines. In short, the current vaccines, while unethically produced, are permissible to receive. However, the Church says that should you choose to receive the vaccine, a letter should be sent to the manufacturer voicing your opposition to their unethical production. The Catholic Medical Association offers a template letter which can be found on their website if you prefer to have a guide.

Have a great week and know of my prayers for a blessed Lent.

In Christ,

¡Feliz domingo!

P. Connealy
