A New Heart

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Have you ever asked God to give you another chance? Your day has come… (actually 40 days). That is also the point of Lent— God gives us another opportunity to seek His mercy and experience His love. Maybe you need this Lent in a way we have not needed Lent before. Here is a simple way to look at repentance: Who? What? When? Where? How? Why?

Who is in need of repentance? That would be everyone! We all need to change some patterns of behavior, some bad attitudes, some bad habits… though maybe not entirely. Who are you in God's eyes? Who has God made you to be? Who do you need to turn toward to be forgiven? Who do you need to forgive?

What do you need to repent of? What behaviors or attitudes get in the way of your peace? What is weighing heavy on your heart? What thoughts plague your mind? What sort of things do you spend your time doing that are preventing you from moving closer to God and who He made you to be?

When do you repent? Every second of every day is an opportunity for practicing goodness. Do you spend your time growing into the saints God has created you to be? Where sin abounds, God's grace is there in abundance. Our Lord is always ready to receive a humble and contrite heart. Rejoice in God's mercy always and become the saint God is calling you to be!

Where do you repent? That depends on your state in life. We all experience "occasions of sin," in which we turn away from God. A teenager deals with different temptations than a senior citizen. Thanks be to God, both can turn towards Our Lord to be strengthened to do His will at all times and in every circumstance in which you find yourself.

How do you repent? You can start with the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Lent gives us three ways of moving from the darkness of sin to the goodness of God. Prayer. Fasting. Almsgiving. How you pray, fast, and give alms is a personal journey that we all must take in order to become the saints God has created us to be.

Why? St. Peter gives an excellent reason: "Christ suffered for sins once, the righteous for the sake of the unrighteous, that he might lead you to God." If we are not led to God, then Christ suffered for us in vain. Our Lord died for us so that we might experience the depth of His love and His mercy. Only in relationship with Christ do we find the freedom that relieves our guilt and brings that peace that we long for.

Jesus also gives us the ultimate reason to our question of why we need to repent: "The kingdom of God is at hand." There is something wonderful to hope for if our repentance is genuine. The kingdom of God is most beautiful and well worth seeking with a contrite heart.

God Bless,

Un nuevo corazón

Queridos hermanos y hermanas:

¿A quién necesitas perdonar?

Dios bendiga,
