Catholics in the Public Square Part 2

Happy Sunday!

We are continuing to slowly get back to something of a normal routine here at St. Joan of Arc. We’ve had some great showings at our Verso l’Alto Youth Group. It’s great to see so many high schoolers on Monday nights. Thank you to our wonderful core team for helping lead our teens.

I want to take another look at Bishop Olmsted’s booklet “Catholics in the Public Square” which we have made available in the narthex. In questions 1-6 Bishop Olmsted talks about the role of the laity in the Church and of Catholics in public life. He writes that the responsibility of Catholics are twofold. First, we are responsible to Jesus Christ and so we must surrender in love to Him as he leads us along the paths of conversion, communion, and solidarity. Next, he reminds us that we need to properly form ourselves in the Church’s teaching, participate actively in her sacramental life, and live our faith in God accordingly. If these things are not in place we will find ourselves quickly lost as we try to navigate our times. However, in surrendering in love to Jesus Christ and the transforming beauty of his truth, we can live our faith more vibrantly in our daily lives. This has important consequences as we engage in our civil duties in society. We must first offer ourselves continually to Jesus Christ and then form ourselves in the Church’s teachings.

Just a reminder that our Sunday Mass at 6:30am will continue to be offered throughout October. Having this Mass helps us have more space at the other Masses. I hope everyone has a great week. Please keep me in your prayers as I will be heading out on my yearly retreat this Thursday. Because of this I won’t see you next weekend, but know of my prayers for each of you.

Christ’s peace,
Fr. Connealy

¡Feliz domingo!

P. Connealy
